Åland is situated in a Finnish archipelago, called the Åland Islands, at the entrance to the Gulf of Bothnia in the Baltic Sea. The Åland Islands were, for many centuries, together with mainland Finland, part of the Kingdom of Sweden. In 1809, however, following her defeat during the Napoleonic Wars, Sweden was forced to cede Finland to Russia.
The history of Åland can be traced back to roughly 4000 BCE, when humans first reached the archipelago in the Neolithic period. Several Bronze Age villages have been found on Åland. During the Viking Age, six hillforts were built.
The reverse side of the Åland provincial coin depicts the coat of arms of the Åland historical province.
