This issue is part of the pan-European eurostar series for 2011 and honors one of Finland's most well known and celebrated scientists, Pehr Kalm (1716-1779).

When explorers during the age of the Enlightenment headed off to the unknown corners of the earth, the father of natural sciences, Carl Linnaeus, sent one of his 17 "apostles", Finnish-born Pehr Kalm, off to North America. During the course of his dangerous travels through troubled regions, Kalm discovered hundreds of new varieties of plants. He wrote up his findings in a series of travel sketches called "American Journeys" and his description of the Niagara Falls was published in several papers. “Gazing at the Niagara Falls would make the hair stand on end”, wrote Kalm in his travel log in 1750. Kalm became the first person to record a scientific measurement of the falls. After getting back to Finland, Kalm concentrated on testing how the flora of the New World would adapt to Finnish conditions. As a result of this work, Boston ivy grows today in Finland.

The obverse features a depiction of Pehr Kalm surveying the Niagara Falls from the Canadian side. The reverse of the coin depicts a stylized and subtly colored image of “Kalmia Latifolia”. Often called Mountain-laurel, it is the state flower of Connecticut and Pennsylvania and named after Kalm.
