The fifth release in the annual German Federation series features the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen - the smallest of Germany's 16 states.
The state of Bremen consists of two separated enclaves: Bremen, officially the "City" and the state capital, and the city of Bremerhaven. Both are located on the River Weser; Bremerhaven is farther downstream and serves as a North Sea harbor. Both cities are completely surrounded by the neighboring State of Lower Saxony (Niedersachsen). The two cities are the only administrative subdivisions in the state.
The reverse of the coin shows the Bremen Town Hall in the background - one of the most important examples of Gothic brick architecture in Europe - and the statue of the city's protector, Roland, in the foreground, erected in 1404 in front of the town hall, facing the cathedral. Charlemagne's knight Roland bears Durendart, the "sword of justice" and a shield decorated with the two-headed imperial eagle as symbols of liberty. From Bremen, the symbol of civic liberty and freedom spread to other cities and has become a symbol of the new Europe. In July 2004, both of these monuments were added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
