Issued on January 10, this commemorative coin marks the 40th anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II's reign, and follows a Danish tradition of issuing commemorative coins to mark special events in the royal family.

The obverse features a new portrait of the Queen in an official role as Sovereign of the two Royal Orders of Chivalry – the Order of the Elephant and the Order of Dannebrog. In the preparatory phase for the reverse, Queen Margrethe herself was asked whether she had any special wishes. She replied very clearly that the Commonwealth of the Faroe Islands, Greenland and Denmark was to be in focus together. The reverse design combines Denmark's three lions and nine hearts, as well as the Faroese ram and Greenland's bear symbol, separated by waves symbolizing the sea that divides the three parts of the kingdom.
