This is only the second Maltese coin set denominated in euros. It comprises the standard eight euro denominations, designed by Noel Galea Bason, as well as the commemorative €2 honoring the "First Elected Representatives – 1849", designed by Ġanni Bonnici. This is the first in a series of five €2 commemorative coins commemorating Malta’s constitutional history.

The coins are presented in a distinctive box, which also includes a medal replica of a coin from the Punic period, the original of which is currently held in the Central Bank of Malta’s Currency Museum collection.

The €2 commemorative coin has only been issued with a low limit of 430,000 coins (375,000 uncirculated in rolls, 50,000 in the BU set and 5,000 in proof quality).
