Issued by Bank Negara Malaysia - the central bank - the Malaysian ringgit is divided into 100 sen (cents). The word ringgit means "jagged" in Malay and was originally used to refer to the serrated edges of silver Spanish dollars which circulated widely in the area during the 16th and 17th century Portuguese colonial era.

Although dated 2011, these new Malaysian coins were issued into circulation on January 16, 2012 and will co-circulate with the existing series. The existing series will be gradually phased out.

Themed "Distinctively Malaysia", the new coins draw inspiration from distinctive features that define the nation's rich culture and heritage. The designs were crafted in the form of nature, flora and fauna and traditional handicraft which is found in Malaysia. The new coins series are in the denominations of 5 sen, 10 sen, 20 sen and 50 sen.
