This is the second issue in a new series called From Clovis to Republic - 1500 years of French history. The series will contain 15 coins over 5 years and highlights French heritage by honoring ten kings, two emperors and three presidents who helped shape the French nation in chronological order.

This issue features Charlemagne, King of the Franks from 768 and Emperor of the Romans (Imperator Romanorum) from 800 to his death in 814. Charlemagne expanded the Frankish kingdom into an empire that incorporated much of Western and Central Europe.

Designed by Christian Lacroix, the obverse features an image of Clovis with his Merovingian crown and his name as a semi-circular inscription. The reverse shows the baptism font at Reims cathedral, where Clovis was baptized, a dove, and the span of his reign.
