Issued on January 27, this coin celebrates the 65th anniversary of the liberation of the concentration camps Auschwitz-Birkenau.
On January 27, 1945 the Soviet Red Army liberated the town of Oświęcim and the Auschwitz II-Birkenau concentration camp, which housed approximately 5,000 critically ill prisoners of various nationalities.
Auschwitz II-Birkenau was designated as the "final solution to the Jewish problem in Europe" by Heinrich Himmler. From spring 1942 until the fall of 1944, trains delivered Jews to the camp's gas chambers from all over Nazi-occupied Europe and it is believed that as many as 1.1 million people died there, around 90 percent of them Jews. Those not killed in the gas chambers died of starvation, forced labor, lack of disease control, individual executions, and medical experiments.
The reverse shows stylized images of three prisoners from the painting "Phantoms are coming back" by Czesław Lenczowski and the infamous inscription over the entrance gate to the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp, "ARBEIT MACHT FREI" (Work makes you free). The obverse features the Eagle as the state emblem of the Republic of Poland.
under the Eagle’s left leg.
