This individually numbered single $5 silver proof coin features the world’s rarest marine dolphin – and the hero of New Zealand’s 2010 annual coin - the Maui's dolphin.

Easily identified by its distinctive round dorsal fin, it can be seen in water less than 60 feet deep – demonstrating a playful agility and keen intelligence that makes it a delight to watch. Tragically though, the Maui's dolphin is living on the knife edge of survival, and is now listed as ‘critically endangered’ by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. This is hardly surprising given that there are only about 111 still living in the wild, and that the very factors that have seen the dolphin’s numbers dramatically depleted still continue to threaten its daily existence.
