The 2010 Canada Proof Coin Set contains a selectively gold-plated commemorative silver dollar commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Canadian Navy, combined with the proof version of Canada’s traditional circulation coins, including the rare and prestigious 50-cent coin.
Canada's emergence as a modern nation took a leap forward when Canada's Navy was founded through the adoption into law of the Naval Service Act on May 4, 1910 and the light cruiser HMCS Rainbow arrived at Esquimalt, British Columbia later that year to serve as the first unit of Canada's new Navy. The Mint is proud to honour the centennial of the Canadian Navy on its 2010 Silver Dollar with the bold image of HMCS Sackville; one of 122 Flower Class Corvettes in operation by the end of World War II, when Canada boasted the third largest navy in the world.
Designed by Nova Scotia artist Yves Bérubé, a Quebec native and member of the Canadian Society of Marine Artists, this doubled-dated sterling silver dollar features HMCS Sackville in action on the high seas whose image is surrounded by the Canadian Navy's motto "Ready Aye Ready/Prêt Oui Prêt" engraved in Morse code. Canada's last surviving Corvette now serves as The Canadian Naval Memorial, berthed in Halifax Harbour as a living museum.
The coins are attractively displayed in a stylish folder that allows the coins to be displayed laid flat within
the specially designed base. An informative booklet, which incorporates a Certificate of Authenticity provides insight into the coin backgrounds.
