Issued on May 5, this is the first release in the new series named "Rome on the Danube".
Virunum was the capital of the Roman province of Noricum and was founded by Emperor Claudius around 50 A.D. as "municipium Claudium Virunum". Virinum started to decline in the 5th century, and was finally destroyed by the Avars and Slavs in the late 6th century.
The reverse shows daily life in Roman times, with a horse and carriage driving the streets of Virunum and a blacksmith preparing swords for battle. The obverse shows a statue of Emperor Claudius in portrait profile - the founder of the city - and a scene taken from a genuine gravestone found during excavations and currently on display in a nearby church.
Each coin comes in an attractive box with a numbered certificate of authenticity.
