2009 marks the 20th anniversary of the death of Salvador Dalí, one of the most exceptional Spanish painters in history.
The reverse depicts the work "Retrospective Bust of a Woman" (1933). The obverse, common to the three silver €10 coins, reproduces the central theme from the painting "Self-Portrait with l'Humanité" (1923).
Salvador Felipe Jacinto Dali I Domenech was born on May 11, 1904 in the small town of Figueres located in the Catalan foothills of the Pyrenees, only sixteen miles from the French border. As an adult, he made his home with his wife Gala in nearby Port Lligat. Many of his paintings reflect his love of this area of Spain. Salvador Dali died on January 23, 1989 in Figueres from heart failure with respiratory complications.
As an artist, Salvador Dali was not limited to a particular style or media. From early impressionist paintings, through his transitional surrealist works and into his classical period, he worked in oils, watercolors, drawings, graphics and sculptures, and expressed them in film, photographs, performance pieces, jewels and objects of all descriptions. Salvador Dali's excellence as a creative artist will always set a standard for the art of the 20th century.
