This is the first silver commemorative issue denominated in euros by the Slovak Central Bank, and commemorates the 150th anniversary of the birth of engineer and physicist Aurel Stodola.
Aurel Boreslav Stodola was a Slovak
engineer, physicist, and inventor, and a
pioneer in the area of technical
thermodynamics and its applications. Stodola was a professor of
mechanical engineering at the Swiss
Polytechnical Institute in Zurich.
Stodola worked closely with industries on
the development of the first practical gas
turbines, in particular Brown, Boveri & Cie,
who built the first turbine-powered electric
generator in 1939.
The obverse depicts a turbo generator of that time.
The reverse shows a portrait of Aurel Stodola, and a pair of compasses used in technical drawings.
