This issue honors the 125th anniversary of the Gaelic Athletics Association (GAA).
The GAA is an
amateur Irish and international cultural and
sporting organization focused primarily on
promoting Gaelic games, which include the
traditional Irish sports of hurling, camogie,
Gaelic football, handball and rounders. The
GAA also promotes Irish music and dance,
and the Irish language. It is the largest
organization in Ireland with some 800,000
members from the island nation's population of six
million.
The obverse side traditionally depicts the 14 string Irish harp modeled on the "Brian Boru" harp in Trinity College, Dublin. This harp has been used on Irish coins since 1928.
