This issue marks the 100th anniversary of the first Youth Hostel, which today has grown into the International Youth Hostel Federation.
In 1909, teacher Richard Schirrmann created the first permanent Jugendherberge (Youth Hostel) in Altena (Nordrhein-Westfalen). The idea of affordable lodgings for young travelers quickly spread throughout Germany and the world, and today there are over 4,000 Youth Hostels worldwide. Despite their name, in most countries membership is not limited to youth.
The reverse shows a modern depiction of the triangular logo of the organization Deutschen Jugendherbergswerks (German Youth Hostel Association). The design also symbolizes today's worldwide reach, and depicts its German origins in the town of Altena. The obverse has the German eagle, the legend "BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND", the twelve stars of the EMU, the denomination, Karlsruhe mint mark, and the year date 2009.
