This issue marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Marion Gräfin Dönhoff, one of the brightest intellectual flames that sprang from the catastrophe of Adolf Hitler's Nazi Reich. She gave Germans unswerving moral and political leadership in the often difficult half-century that followed World War II. Dönhoff participated in the failed plot of July 20, 1944 to assassinate Hitler and for nearly 60 years was a dominant figure on the highly influential liberal weekly Die Zeit.
