This issue celebrates the 600th anniversary of the University of Leipzig.

The University of Leipzig in Saxony is one of the oldest universities in Europe. Founded on December 2, 1409 by Frederick I and his brother William II, it originally comprised four faculties. Since its inception the university has enjoyed almost 600 years of uninterrupted teaching and research.

The reverse shows the Grand Seal of the Universität Leipzig to the left, featuring the Holy Laurentius, protector of its students, and John the Baptist. To the right is the University's academic motto “Theoria cum praxi”, which was coined by one of its most famous students, Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, who is also depicted. The lower image shows the University's new building, which is intended to remind people of the of the St. Pauli Church that was destroyed in 1968. This was an attempt by the East German dictatorship to separate the University from its past as far as buildings were concerned. Although undamaged by bombing during World War II, as well as being the only still usable old main building, it was destroyed. The last elements on the reverse are the legends "600 Jahre Universität Leipzig" and the year dates "1409 - 2009". The obverse has the German eagle, the legend "BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND", the twelve stars of the EMU, the denomination, Berlin mint mark, and the year date 2009.
