This release marks the 400th anniversary of Johannes Kepler's book "Astronomia Nova" (A New Astronomy), which included his first two laws of planetary motion.

Kepler's laws of planetary motion are three mathematical laws that describe the motion of planets in the Solar System. Kepler's laws challenged Aristotelean and Ptolemaic astronomy and physics. His assertion that the Earth moved, his use of ellipses rather than epicycles, and his proof that the planets' speeds varied, changed astronomy and physics. Almost a century later Isaac Newton was able to deduce Kepler's laws from Newton's own laws of motion and his law of universal gravitation, using classical Euclidean geometry.

The reverse shows Kepler's profile superimposed on a geometric coordinate system used to mathematically calculate his three laws of planetary motion. The obverse has the German eagle, the legend "BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND", the twelve stars of the EMU, the denomination, the Stuttgart mint mark, and the year date 2009.
