Issued on May 4, this is the third coin in a series of Impressionist painters that started in 2007 with Degas. The second coin was issued in 2008 and featured Edouard Manet.

Claude Monet was the founder of French impressionist painting, and the most consistent and prolific practitioner of the movement's philosophy of expressing one's own perceptions of nature, especially as applied to outdoor landscape painting. The term Impressionism is derived from the title of his painting "Impression, Sunrise".
