This issue includes the complete commemorative €2 euro coinage of Finland until 2009. Also included in the set is a mint medal designed by Hannu Veijalainen, featuring a squirrel. The design is based on the fact that squirrel pelts were widely used as means of payment in trade before the currency system was introduced.

In 2009 it’s ten years since the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) that coordinates the economic and financial policies in Europe was founded. In the same year eleven EU countries adopted the euro as their official currency. Initially, the euro was an account currency only – euro-denominated cash was issued in 2002. To celebrate the event, Mint of Finland introduces a unique set of Finnish €2 commemorative coins, comprising all Finnish €2 commemorative coins issued so far, seven coins in all.
