Issued on February 23, this is the third and last issue in the series with the Polar regions as common theme, issued to mark the International Polar Year 2007-2009. All polar coins will have designs inspired by the Polar areas of Greenland.

The reverse shows an impression of some of the scientific research based in Greenland split evenly between three distinct parts of the table, namely research around the magnetic North Pole, the ice core and mineralogy. The shadowy Northern Lights in the top field represent the magnetic North Pole, the minerals in the bottom field are shown in their basic crystalline forms, and the landscape in the middle is modeled so as to resemble a direct experience of a Polar landscape – the surface of the water, the curve of the sky and the sharp structural diversity of the mountains and the ice. At the bottom of the design, the compass rose points directly to the North Star at the very top of the design. The obverse shows a portrait of Queen Margaret in profile.
