This issue is dedicated to the 450th anniversary of the Polish Post (Poczta Polska). On October 18, 1558, king Zygmunt August established a permanent postal route from Kraków to Venice - and later also to Vilnius - in order to manage affairs in Italy that arose after the death of Queen Bona. Early letters and correspondence was forwarded by messengers by foot or horseback.

The first postage stamps to appear in Polish territories were issued in 1850 under the occupation by Austria and Prussia. The first Polish postage stamp was issued on January 1, 1860, replacing the Russian stamps previously in circulation.
