This coin is issued to celebrate the 90th anniversary of Latvian Statehood.

The Republic of Latvia was proclaimed on November 18, 1918 at a time when the national flag, anthem, and currency had yet to be introduced. Instead, the founders of the Republic displayed courage, initiative and faith in a free Latvia. They cherished the hope that the suffering endured during World War I would never recur.

The reverse shows a child's stylized picture of a boy and a girl holding a Latvian flag in their joined hands. The obverse features the first Coat-of-Arms of the Republic of Latvia, with an image of the red-white-red national flag underneath.
