Issued on March 5, this coin commemorates the 100th anniversary of the death of architect Josef Hlávka. This year marks 100 years since the death of Josef Hlávka, an architect, constructor and the biggest Czech philanthropist of all time. Hlavka established a foundation in support of education, science and art, and when he died, he bequeathed all his property to the foundation. It is the only case in Czech history where someone left his entire fortune to charity. Unfortunately, there aren't many buildings in Prague that remind us of Josef Hlavka's architectural skill, as most of his plans were carried out in neighboring Austria. In Vienna he is remembered as one of the most successful architects of the 1860's. Over a period of ten years, from 1860 to 1870, Hlavka designed and built around 150 buildings, some of which exist to this day. His biggest achievement is the Vienna Opera, which he built at the behest of Emperor Franz Joseph I. The Emperor was very pleased with the result and presented him with a special award: a mason's tools made of silver, which is now to be seen in the Hlavka museum in Luzany.
