This coin celebrates the 150th anniversary of Austrian innovator Carl Auer von Welsbach, who is particularly well known for his work on rare earth elements. This led to the development of the flint used in modern lighters, the gas mantle which brought light to the streets of Europe in the late 1800s, and the development of the metal filament light bulb.

The obverse shows a person lighting a lantern in front of the town hall of Vienna. The reverse features a portrait detail of Carl Auer von Welsbach, surrounded by a collage of historic as well as modern illumination instruments.

Each coin is packed in an attractive case, accompanied by a numbered certificate of authenticity.
