This is the third commemorative €2 coin from Luxembourg in as many years, and was issued to celebrate the 25th birthday of Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume.

The Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume of Luxembourg (Guillaume Jean Joseph Marie) was born on November 11, 1981 and is the Heir Apparent to the throne of Luxembourg. A descendant of the House of Nassau, which has ruled Luxembourg since 1890, Guillaume is the oldest child of Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa.

The obverse of the coin features the profiled portraits of Grand Duke Henri and Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume.
