The Atomium - the Eiffel Tower of Brussels - was designed by architect André Waterkeyn for the 1958 World's Fair. This 103 meter (335 feet) tall monument was erected as a symbol of the atomic age, representing the peaceful use of nuclear energy, and depicts the cell of an iron crystal magnified 165 billion times. Nine steel spheres, 18 meters each in diameter, connect via escalators in tubes as long as 35 meters. Windows in the top sphere provide a panoramic view of Brussels.

Originally planned to be open for only six months, the monument has survived to become a popular tourist attraction that some feel is a Belgian national icon.
