Angra do Heroísmo on Terceira island in the Azores is the most beautiful example of renaissance town planning in Portugal. Here you will find wonderful palaces and manors from the 17th and 18th century. Regrettably, on New Year's Day 1980 a part of the Old town was destroyed by an earthquake but was rebuild in the spirit of the town.

It was placed on Unesco's World Heritage List in 1983.
