The Republic of Kazakhstan declared its sovereignty from the Soviet Union on October 25, 1990, and became independent on December 16, 1991. Its first constitution was adopted on January 28, 1993, but it was replaced by national referendum on August 30, 1995. Today, Kazakhstan is a constitutional republic with a strong presidency.
