2004 Portugal €5 Silver Proof "Convent of Christ"

This issue from the Portuguese Mint introduces a series of coins to be issued in honor of the Portuguese World Heritage Sites, and celebrates the Convent of Christ in the city of Tomar.

Added to the UNESCO list in 1983, the convent was originally designed as a monument symbolizing the Reconquest. The Convent of the Knights Templar of Tomar (transferred in 1344 to the Knights of the Order of Christ) came to symbolize just the opposite during the Manueline period - the opening up of Portugal to other civilizations.

Designed by Jose Candido, the coin is minted in proof quality in 92.5% sterling silver. It measures 30 mm in diameter and weighs 14 grams.

The worldwide mintage limit is 10,000 pcs, and the item comes delivered encapsulated in a wooden box with a printed sleeve and a certificate of authenticity.
