Until very recently, the mint director of the Mint of Norway's initials were featured as a mint mark on Norwegian coinage. In 2001, there was a short period of time between mint directors Jan-Erik Johansen (JEJ) and Magne Flågan (MF) when there was no acting mint director for the mint. As it happens, this period coincided with the necessary minting of 10,000 pcs. 20-krone coins for the Brilliant issue of the year. Following old tradition, it was decided to place a star where the mint director's initials typically should have been located.

In doing so, they also created a numismatic rarity second only to the 2-øre from 1968.
