Issued in 1993, this coin celebrated the 150th anniversary of the birth of one of the world's great composers, namely Norway's own Edvard Grieg. This was the first of the modern Norwegian gold issues, which currently counts only 11 releases, and not very popular at its release. The maximum mintage was 12,000 coins, bit in the end only 5,139 pieces were sold. The remaining 6,861 coins were destroyed by melting at the end of the year, making this the rarest modern Norwegian gold coin to date. The reverse shows Edvard Grieg playing his piano, based on a 1900 photograph from Berlin by Leonard Bieber. The obverse shows the 1844-1905 Norwegian Coat-of-Arms.
